چکیده

T Advanced Study Institute on Regression of Atherosclerotic Lesions, sponsored by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was held at Maratea, Italy, September 11-23, 1983. The director was M. Rene Malinow and the codirector was Victor Blaton. Fifteen leading research scientists and more than 30 students from Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Africa attended. The institute was designed to foster discussion of experimental data on the regression of atherosclerosis in animals and evidence of a similar phenomenon in humans. Experts in the field gave presentations on a wide variety of topics, and many students gave short communications. The program allowed ample time for discussion, for one-on-one conversations, and for maximum interaction among participants.

Rapid regression of atherosclerosis induced by liver-directed gene transfer of ApoE in ApoE-deficient mice.

Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is a multifunctional protein synthesized by the liver and tissue macrophages. ApoE-deficient mice have severe hyperlipidemia and develop accelerated atherosclerosis on a chow diet. Both liver-derived and macrophage-derived apoEs have been shown to reduce plasma lipoprotein levels and slow the progression of atherosclerosis in apoE-deficient mice, but regression of athero...

Progression and regression of atherosclerotic lesions: monitoring with serial noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND Modification or stabilization of atherosclerotic plaques has been proposed as the mechanism responsible for the beneficial clinical effect of lipid-lowering therapies. An imaging modality able to quantify atherosclerotic plaque composition could potentially allow not only the identification of these vulnerable atherosclerotic lesions, but also monitoring of the effects of therapeutic...

A Study Design to Evaluate Association between Smoking and Intracranial Atherosclerotic Stenosis

PURPOSE Smoking is a well known risk factor for stroke. The cerebral arteries may be uniquely susceptible to the atherosclerotic effects of smoking, such that it has a different risk profile for stroke compared with other atherosclerosis risk factors. It remains uncertain whether smoking is associated specifically with intracranial (IC) or extracranial (EC) atherosclerotic cerebrovascular disea...

Evidence that macrophages in atherosclerotic lesions contain angiotensin II.

BACKGROUND We have reported that human mononuclear leukocytes contain large amounts of angiotensin II (Ang II). The goal of the present study was to test the hypothesis that Ang II is present in monocyte/macrophages in atherosclerotic lesions. METHODS AND RESULTS Segments of thoracic aorta and left circumflex coronary artery were obtained from 3 groups of cynomolgus monkeys: normal, atheroscl...

Reduction of isoprostanes and regression of advanced atherosclerosis by apolipoprotein E.

Apolipoprotein E is a multifunctional protein synthesized by hepatocytes and macrophages. Plasma apoE is largely liver-derived and known to regulate lipoprotein metabolism. Macrophage-derived apoE has been shown to reduce the progression of atherosclerosis in mice. We tested the hypothesis that liver-derived apoE could directly induce regression of pre-existing advanced atherosclerotic lesions ...
